Montclair, located in Essex County, New Jersey was originally home to the Lenape Indians and later settled by the Europeans and Dutch. The township became a community when the railroads began to transport many people to and from urban businesses. Business men who were attracted to the tranquil setting, created a "country town" with convenient access to New York city.

Community leaders of that day endowed the town with superior schools, an excellent public library, a distinguished art museum and many large and influential churches which are still in existence. The town's heritage in education and the arts has been expanded by the many offerings of Montclair State University as well as museums, local theaters, gardens and parks.
